As any prominent honors show nears, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
