The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he admitted that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio became as messy in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.
Cancellieri's Surprising Comeback
One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He spent last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.
He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Uncovering His True Position
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of his skill set. Billed as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
